English for Today by Ganiu Abisoye Bamgbose (Dr GAB)

HAGGLE or ARGUE?

Have you ever seen a Yoruba woman ~arguing~ with a fishmonger (general)?
Have you ever seen a Yoruba woman *haggling* with a fishmonger (specific).
If you haggle, you argue about something before reaching an agreement, especially about the cost of something that you are buying.

The word can also be used as a noun:
She laughed continuously as she enjoyed her haggle with the fishmonger.

Note that a person who sells fish is a fishmonger.
