Dr. Ganiu Bamgbose

Dr Ganiu Bamgbose is a lecturer in the Department of English, Lagos State university, and a public essayist with over 200 newspaper publications on subjects ranging from language use to communication and education in all major Nigerian newspapers. He holds a PhD in English with specialisation in humour studies. Ganiu Bamgbose has investigated the manifestation and functions of humour in different discourse types such as comedies, music, advertisement, memes, classroom interactions and casual interactions. The hallmark of his scholarship is humour as a tool for social re-engineering.

He has published in both local and international journals. His works have appeared in journals such as European Journal of Humour Research, Israeli Journal of Humour, Argentinian Journal of Applied Linguistics, Linguistik Online, Legon Journal of Humanities, Ibadan Journal of Humanistic Studies, among others. He has published two books and co-edited one.

He currently teaches and researches in aspects of applied linguistics such as pragmatics, (critical) discourse analysis, stylistics, sociolinguistics and the English language in Nigeria. Dr GAB, as he is fondly called by his numerous fans, is also a social commentator, content creator, emcee, and public speaker. He is the author of daily online lessons, “English for Today”, with thousands of lessons on Use of English, which are made available to readers all around the world through his website, www.drgab.com.ng

He is a member of different academic bodies such as: English Scholars’ Association of Nigeria, Linguistics Association of Nigeria and Pragmatics Association of Nigeria. Dr Ganiu Bamgbose was honoured as the EduPreneur of the Year 2022 by the Ajegunle Business School and also emerged as the Most Outstanding Young Academic of the year 2022 in the Lagos Youth Award.
