Did you know that…
1. To be upstanding means to be honest and dependable (not, to stand).
2. To be natty is to be spotless and very smart (not, to be rough).
3. Abroad is any foreign country (not necessarily advanced countries). So to have been to Benin as a Nigerian means you’ve been abroad.
4. Local means being connected to a place (not, being sophisticated). R Kelly is a local musician in America while Saheed Osupa becomes an international musician once he visits America.
5. Adjacent means near (not, opposite). This word has made many Nigerians knock on a wrong gate.

Upstanding also means in an erect position [though archaic].
It is therefore not wrong, I guess, for a person to be instructed to be upstanding.
I have observed that some archaic expressions sometimes receive currency in contemporary English.
