A desert is a large area of land, usually in a hot region, where there is almost no water, rain, trees, or plants.

Dessert is something sweet, such as fruit or a pudding, that you eat at the end of a meal.
At the level of pronunciation, the first e in desert is pronounced like the e in egg, while the first e in dessert is pronounced like the i in it.
