UNAWARE or UNAWARES?

She was ~unawares~ of his presence (nonstandard).
She was *unaware* of his presence (standard).
If you are unaware of something, you do not know about it.

The rain caught me ~unaware~ and I had no umbrella (nonstandard).
The rain caught me *unawares* and I had no umbrella (standard).
If something catches or takes you unawares, it happens when you do not expect it to.
