To PERPETUATE or PERPETRATE?

They’ve been ~perpetuating~ atrocities against innocent persons (nonstandard).
They’ve been *perpetrating* atrocities against innocent persons (standard).
If someone perpetrates a crime or any other immoral or harmful act, they do it.

Some persons ~perpetrate~ religious divisions for bad reasons (nonstandard).
Some persons *perpetuate* religious divisions for bad reasons (standard).
If someone or something perpetuates a situation, system, or belief, especially a bad one, they cause it to continue.
