CONCORD: RELATIVE PRONOUNS
The man who ~sell rice also sell~ beans (nonstandard).
The man who *sells rice and sells* beans (standard).
When relative pronouns such as “who” and “whose” are used, the first verb is controlled by the noun before the relative pronoun and the second verb is controlled by the first noun or pronoun in the sentence. Sometimes, there could be just one noun or pronoun like the example above and such noun or pronoun controls both verbs. More examples:
The boy whose parents live/live here is/are a student
Analysis:
The boy is a student + his parents live here= The boy whose parents *live* here *is* a student.
Now, try these:
1. None of those who ___ often ___ him (come/comes, like/likes).
2. The number of students who __ the course ___ alarming (offer/offers, is/are).
3. A number of people who fast during Ramadan also ___ (fast/fasts, pray/prays).
4. The lecturer whose skits __ posted here __ also a columnist (are/is, are/is).
