English for Today by Ganiu Abisoye Bamgbose (Dr GAB)
Are you on the first floor or ground floor?
Many don’t like to to live on the *ground floor* (Br. Eng.).
Many don’t like to live on the *first floor* (Am. Eng.).
Note that the ground floor of a building is the floor that is level or almost level with the ground outside and it is called first floor in American English.
This means that the first floor in British English is the second floor in American English. So when anyone tells you to meet them on the third floor, you have to be sure of the variety of English they have in mind.
