CEASE or SEIZE?

I hope this rain ~seizes~ so that we can leave for school (nonstandard).
I hope this rain *ceases* so that we can leave for school (standard).
If something ceases, it stops happening or existing.

Why did you have to ~cease~ her hand (nonstandard)?
Why did you have to *seize* her hand (standard)?
If you seize something, you take hold of it quickly, firmly, and forcefully.
