Wrong Use of Adverbs

~Less~ than a dozen applications have been received (nonstandard).
*Fewer* than a dozen applications have been received (standard).
Fewer is used in reference to number. Fewer is the comparative form of few and it is used with countable nouns.

I do ~fewer work~ at weekends than I used to (nonstandard).
I do *less work* at weekends than I used to (standard).
Less is the comparative form of little and it is used with uncountable nouns.
