COUNCILLOR or COUNSELLOR?

He contested as a ~counsellor~ in my ward last year (nonstandard).
He contested as a *councillor* in my ward last year (standard).
A councillor is a member of a local council. Note that the word can also be spelt with a single l: councilor.

Every school should have at least one ~councillor~ (nonstandard).
Every school should have at least one *counsellor* (standard).
A counsellor is a person whose job is to give advice to people who need it, especially advice on their personal problems. The American variant of the word is also spelt with a single l: counselor.
