POTABLE or PORTABLE?

The government should provide ~portable~ water (nonstandard).
The government should provide potable water (standard). Potable means “clean and safe to drink”. Note also that the “o” in the word is pronounced like the “o” in goal, not like the “o” in portable.

A portable device is designed to be easily carried or moved:
He got a portable television.
