Our tools are not available yet; in the meantime, let’s work with our hands (standard). A time before something happens or before a specified period ends is described as meantime. This should not be mistaken for another expression, in the main, which means on the whole: We must all remember that in the main, we have to complete this task this evening.
Some tasks could really be ~tasking~ (nonstandard).
Some tasks could really be taxing (standard). A physically or mentally demanding activity is said to be taxing.
