Speaking Accurately

Save for a raining day (nonstandard).
Save for a rainy day (standard). It is used in reference to a possible time in the future when money will be needed.

You can stick to your gun (nonstandard).
You can stick to your guns (standard). If you stick to your guns, you continue to have your own opinion about something even though other people are trying to tell you that you are wrong.

He plays truancy (nonstandard).
He plays truant (standard). If a pupil plays truant, he or she stays away from school without permission.
