Don’t take your life in your hands (standard). To do something that is very dangerous, especially where you risk death is to take your life in your hands.

He took me out for lunch (nonstandard).
He took me out to lunch (standard).

He brought dishonour to his family (nonstandard).
He brought dishonour on his family (standard).
