She turned the table on her rivals (nonstandard).
She turned the tables on her rivals (standard). To change a situation so that you now have an advantage over someone who previously had an advantage over you is to turn the tables.

We are to have peace talk (nonstandard).
We are to have peace talks (standard). A conference or series of discussions aimed at ending hostilities is called peace talks (even if it holds just once).
