The memoranda (singular, memorandum) have become one of the major ways of business communication in the modern world. The term applies to a wide variety of official communication within a given business organization. A memorandum may often be used to convey information of a concise nature in order to : advise, instruct, propose, remind, warn, guide or motivate.
The memorandum must be seen as brief notes which form part of the written communication channel in a modern organization. Little (1965) asserts that the original meaning of the word ‘memorandum’, was a note to help the memory. While it is conventional for memoranda to be brief, the uniqueness of contexts can produce variations in length.
Memoranda (memo for short) could be written by:
1) Superior officers to their subordinates.
2) Subordinates to superior officers.
3) A concerned member of a community or an organization to spot-light issues of personal or collective interest.
4) A citizen/community to the government.
5) Government to government.
6) Government to community.
7) Office to office. etc
