MANY or MUCH?

We are not much in our class (nonstandard).
We are not many in our unit (standard).
The quantifier, “much”, is used with abstract concepts or to an indefinite amount while many refers to a precise countable number.

Don’t add many salt (nonstandard).
Don’t add much salt (standard).
