A belated happy birthday to my friend (standard). Think of it that it was the good wishes that came late, and not the birthday.
We had ~toast bread~ and tea for breakfast (nonstandard).
We had toast and tea for breakfast (standard). Sliced bread browned on both sides by exposure to radiant heat, such as a grill or fire is called toast.
If you’ve not worked for it, don’t describe any amount as ~chicken change~ (nonstandard).
If you’ve not worked for it, don’t describe any amount as chicken feed (standard).
