If you do something from scratch, you do it without making use of anything that has been done before.
You shouldn’t say that ~in the public~ (nonstandard).
You shouldn’t say that *in public* (standard).
If you say or do something in public, you say or do it when a group of people are present.
The process was a mess from ~start to the finish~ (nonstandard).
The process was a mess *from start to finish* (standard).
