Apostrophe is a punctuation mark, and it performs the following functions in English:
1. Apostrophe is used to pluralise items such as numbers, letters and symbols:
She had several *A’s* in the external exam.
There are six *5’s* in her result.
Some styles don’t accept the use of *&’s* (ampersands).
2. Apostrophe is used to indicate the omission of a letter or letters in contractions:
*Don’t* = do not
*I’m* = I am
*Shouldn’t* = should not
*Didn’t* = did not
3. Apostrophe is also used to show ownership/possession:
*Dr GAB’s* daily lessons are useful to all.
Subsequent lessons this week will discuss the rules guiding the use of apostrophe to indicate ownership.
